Question
What is the time difference between the UK and South Africa?
South Africa is one hour ahead of the UK during British Summer Time and two hours ahead in winter. In practice that means a near-total overlap with your working day: your consultant is in the morning stand-up and answering in Slack in real time, not overnight.
Why South Africa sits where it does
South Africa is almost directly south of the UK on the map. London sits at roughly 0 degrees longitude and Cape Town at about 18 degrees east, so the two countries share nearly the same slice of the world. South African Standard Time is UTC+2 year round, and because South Africa does not observe daylight saving, the gap narrows to a single hour when the UK moves to British Summer Time.
How it compares with other offshore markets
This is the structural difference between South Africa and the destinations most UK businesses consider first. The Philippines runs seven to eight hours ahead of London, which means a genuine handover rather than a conversation. Latin America runs three to eight hours behind and is oriented towards US business hours.
With South Africa there is no handover to design around. A consultant starts an hour before you and finishes an hour before you, which in practice is indistinguishable from a colleague who likes an early start.
